How to Use the Psychrometric Calculator

The psychrometric calculator is a free engineering tool that works out every property of moist air from two known values. This episode shows, step by step, choosing the location and altitude, entering two known values, saving and comparing summer and winter conditions, the psychrometric chart, the comparison table and the PDF report.

  • The tool calculates every property of the air from any two known values among dry bulb, relative humidity, wet bulb, humidity ratio and dew point; humidity ratio and dew point cannot be chosen together because they carry the same information.
  • Choosing a location sets the altitude and atmospheric pressure: 1016 m and 89.70 kPa for Konya. The same 25 °C and 50% RH means 9.93 g/kg in Istanbul but 11.19 g/kg in Konya.
  • For the example office in Konya, the summer condition of 24 °C and 55% gives a humidity ratio of 11.60 g/kg and a dew point of 14.4 °C.
  • In the winter condition of 22 °C and 30%, the humidity ratio falls to 5.55 g/kg and the dew point to 3.6 °C; the difference of about 6 grams between the two points is made up by humidification in winter.
  • Up to six points can be saved and compared on the chart and in the comparison table; the calculation can be downloaded as a PDF report or shared by link.

Dehumidification in Plastics Production

In plastics production, moisture does harm in two ways: moisture inside the granules causes defects and hydrolysis during processing, and moisture in the room air condenses on the cold mould surface and causes mould sweating. This episode covers hygroscopic and non-hygroscopic plastics, processing moisture limits, moisture regain in granules, mould sweating with a worked dew point example, why warming the cooling water is not a lasting fix, the lasting fix with dry air, technology choice and capacity sizing.

Dehumidification in Cooling Tunnels

In chocolate and confectionery production, gloss is often lost at the end of the cooling tunnel. If the cold product surface is below the dew point of the tunnel air or the room air at the exit, moisture condenses on it and sugar bloom begins. This episode covers where condensation begins, why relative humidity can mislead, dew point targets by product, the buffer zone at the exit, infiltration, a worked moisture load and dry-air flow, and choosing the right dehumidification technology.

Why Cylinder Life Shortens in Electrode Humidifiers

The same electrode steam humidifier can give very different cylinder life on two sites: on one the cylinder lasts a long time, on the other it is replaced far more often. The difference comes from the feed water and how the unit is operated. This episode covers how minerals build up in the cylinder as steam is produced, how scale coats the electrodes, the conductivity band, the drain balance, foaming, water treatment choices and the effect of the operating profile on life, and compare them with resistive humidifiers that have a cleanable steam tank.
