Definition
A stainless-steel or ceramic orifice element that atomises water into micron-size droplets in high-pressure or ultrasonic humidification; typical orifice diameter 0.15–0.40 mm, material AISI 316L or sapphire-reinforced ceramic.
Detailed Explanation
A nozzle is the "screwdriver" of a high-pressure misting system — flow, droplet size and spray angle all depend on this small part. The industry standard is an AISI 316L body with a sapphire or ceramic orifice insert. Typical specs: 0.15–0.40 mm orifice, 1–6 kg/h at 70 bar, 60–90° spray angle, integrated anti-drip valve. Life: 8,000–15,000 h on RO feed; clogs in 2,000–4,000 h on mains water.
Why It Matters
Nozzle choice drives three success factors: (1) DROPLET SIZE — small orifice (0.15 mm) gives small droplets (10–15 μm) and fast evaporation; large orifice (0.40 mm) gives large droplets (25–40 μm) with wetting risk. (2) HYGIENE — stainless is standard; bronze or brass corrode and harbour bacteria. (3) SYSTEM LIFE — scaling rate sets clogging frequency; RO pre-treatment extends nozzle life 3–5×. Wrong nozzle selection costs €20,000–80,000 in extra annual maintenance.
Practical Example
A textile plant in Denizli was first installed with 0.40 mm orifices on mains water (hardness 22 fH). After 3 months, 40 of 120 nozzles were clogged and capacity had dropped 30%. NKT analysis: smaller orifice (0.40 → 0.25 mm) plus RO pre-treatment. Over the next 18 months, zero clogs, stable capacity, and annual nozzle replacement cost down 75% (€2,400 → €600).
Engineering Note
Nozzle sizing: total capacity (kg/h) ÷ per-nozzle capacity (kg/h at design pressure) = nozzle count. We always add 15–20% spare capacity in the field — if a few nozzles clog, the total holds. Anti-drip valves are mandatory: residual water in each nozzle (≈ 5–10 ml) is captured rather than dripping. Typical spare stock is 10% (100-nozzle system carries 10 spares). Annual periodic maintenance includes a flow test per nozzle.
NKT Application Link
NKT offers six standard orifice sizes (0.15–0.40 mm) for Neptronic SKH misting systems; combinations are tailored per application (e.g. 0.15 mm for precision printing, 0.25 mm for textile weaving, 0.35 mm for greenhouses). 48-hour spare-parts delivery from Turkish stock is standard.
