Paper and cellulose production is a comprehensive process that requires humidity management at every stage from raw material to finished product. The moisture profile formed in the paper machine directly determines the product grammage, stiffness, surface smoothness, and print readiness. When stable humidity is not maintained in the production hall, paper loses dimensional stability after exiting the calender. Low humidity causes paper to curl and develop edge waviness, increasing the amount of rejected rolls. Breakage rates increase during rewinding and coating processes, and line stoppages become more frequent. Humidity differences in carton and corrugated board lines negatively affect cutting and folding quality.

In production facilities equipped with an industrial humidifier, production halls generally target 50 to 65 percent relative humidity, paper warehouses target 45 to 55 percent, and carton lines target 50 to 60 percent. These values are fine-tuned based on the paper type and intended end use.

Humidity management in paper mills requires high-capacity systems due to the volume of production halls and high heat loads from machinery. Duct-type steam humidifiers or high-pressure atomization systems integrated with industrial air handling units create homogeneous humidity profiles in rewinding and calendering zones. Independent control loops operating at different setpoints from the production area are installed for paper warehouses, maintaining stability of storage humidity conditions.

With proper humidity management, paper dimensional stability is preserved from calender exit to warehouse. Waste roll quantities decrease, raw material efficiency increases, and production capacity rises. Since air humidity regulates drying speed and coating homogeneity in surface coating processes, the humidification system also increases the reliability of these processes.
