Gas Turbine Applications

Energy & Turbines

Gas turbines play an important role in energy production and industrial applications. During planned or unplanned shutdowns, there is a risk that ambient conditions may have adverse effects on turbine components. The use of industrial dehumidifiers during these shutdowns is essential for preserving the turbine's performance and extending its service life.

The turbine blades of gas turbines are manufactured from high-tensile alloy steel. Unfavorable ambient conditions that develop during planned or unplanned shutdowns not only compromise the strength of high-alloy steel materials but also increase the risk of corrosion damage to low-alloy components. In shutdowns where industrial dehumidifiers are not used, corrosion of the turbine shaft can cause internal imbalances, while worn or surface-degraded turbine blades heat unevenly. One of the sources of unexpected vibration during the rapid start-up of gas turbines is the imbalance created by blades that have undergone surface deformation. By using industrial dehumidifiers with ventilation systems integrated with one-way airflow valves to deliver air into the turbine during shutdowns, the turbine blades and turbine shaft are protected. During turbine integration of an industrial dehumidifier designed for gas turbine applications, the turbine dampers must be closed to ensure that the hot and dry air produced by the dehumidifier completely envelops the turbine's internal volume. The air inside must be exhausted through the exhaust line where hot gases are discharged, and all surfaces must be brought into contact with fresh dry air to prevent metal surfaces from coming into contact with water vapor in the air.
