Definition
A stainless-steel manifold with one or several arms that distributes steam from a steam humidifier evenly across an AHU duct or directly into a space.
Detailed Explanation
A steam distribution manifold (steam distributor) is a nozzled 304 stainless-steel pipe that spreads steam from the humidifier evenly across the section of an AHU duct or air handler. In Neptronic distributors the nozzles draw steam from the centre of the tube, so condensate formed on the tube wall does not escape into the duct; the sloped tube returns this condensate to the unit or a steam trap.
There are three main in-duct types: the S.A.M. (Short Absorption Manifold) single-tube wand, the S.A.M.E2 with two rows of nozzles at 90°, and the Multi-Steam™ SD/HD/HDR, built from many vertical tubes on a common header. All are custom-built to the duct size; tube count, length and nozzle layout are set by the manufacturer from steam flow and section.
Why It Matters
A correctly selected distributor gives a short absorption distance, a dry duct and even humidity across the section. Poor selection or placement causes three typical problems: (1) Condensate dripping: condensate formed in an uninsulated or unsloped line is carried from the distributor into the duct, with hygiene (Legionella), corrosion and damage risks below the duct. (2) Uneven distribution: a short or single distributor in a wide section concentrates steam in one region, the plume lengthens and the sensor cannot see the duct average. (3) Wet obstructions: an elbow, filter or sensor inside the absorption distance gets wet.
Practical Example
In a 1,200 × 600 mm duct with air moving at 2.5 m/s the airflow is about 6,480 m³/h. If the air arrives at 22 °C and 35% RH and must be raised to 50%, the moisture difference is about 2.5 g/kg and the steam required is 6,480 × 1.2 × 2.5 / 1,000 ≈ 19 kg/h. A 20 kg/h SKE4 (50 Hz) can cover this load, with an S.A.M. or S.A.M.E2 built to the duct width as the distributor. Per manufacturer data their absorption distance is under 1.5 m; the high-limit sensor and the first elbow are placed outside this distance.
Engineering Note
Selection and installation points: (1) The distributor goes after the heating and cooling coils, in a straight section with an even velocity profile. (2) No obstruction sits within the absorption distance downstream; the final filter and high-limit humidity sensor are outside it. (3) Per the Neptronic manual, flexible steam hose stays within 5 m in total; the steam line gets at least 2% slope on downward runs and at least 15% on upward runs, with no sags. (4) The S-type trap in the condensate line is at least 51 mm higher than the system static pressure. (5) In narrow ducts or short straight sections, shorter-distance distributors such as the S.A.M.E2 or Multi-Steam™ are preferred.
NKT Application Link
As Neptronic's distributor in Türkiye, NKT supplies S.A.M., S.A.M.E2 and Multi-Steam™ distributors together with SKE4, SKS4 and SKD humidifiers. Given the duct dimensions, airflow, air conditions and the straight duct length after the distributor, it supports selecting the unit and distributor together and provides technical service and spare-parts support.
