What is the steam distribution manifold and why is it needed?

A steam distribution manifold is a stainless-steel pipe that spreads the dense steam flow from a steam humidifier evenly across the section of an HVAC duct or air handler. Steam injected at a single point piles up in part of the section, the plume lengthens, the sensor is misled and surfaces get wet. The distributor spreads the steam across the section for fast mixing. In Neptronic distributors steam is drawn from the centre of the tube through nozzles along its length; the tube is mounted with a slope and condensate formed inside returns to the unit or a steam trap.

What is absorption distance and how is it determined?

Absorption distance is the distance over which steam leaving the distributor fully mixes into the airstream and the visible mist disappears. The white plume we see consists of micron-sized droplets formed when steam meets cooler air; they re-evaporate further downstream. The distance is not given by a simple formula but by the manufacturer's selection software or charts, using inlet RH, RH after humidification, air velocity, air temperature and the number/spacing of dispersion tubes. Neptronic data give an absorption distance under 1.5 m for S.A.M. and S.A.M.E2 and under 1 m for Multi-Steam™.

Where should the steam distributor sit in the air handler?

The distributor goes after the heating and cooling coils, in a straight section where the air is warmest and the velocity profile is even. Example sequence: mixing box → filter → preheat → cooling → reheat → fan → steam distributor (+ absorption distance) → final filter / high-limit humidity sensor → supply duct. Steam injected ahead of a cooling coil condenses on the coil again, and steam injected into cold air approaches saturation sooner. The control sensor is located in the room or the return duct.

How far from the distributor must sensors, elbows and filters be?

The general rule is that no obstacle may sit inside the absorption distance downstream of the distributor. Elbows, transitions and dampers stay outside it; the final filter (F9/HEPA) and the high-limit humidity sensor also stay outside it, with extra margin per the manufacturer. The control sensor is in the room or the return duct. Exact distances are set from manufacturer data for the project conditions. If the straight duct after the distributor is short, the solution is a shorter-distance distributor (S.A.M.E2 or Multi-Steam™).

Why does in-duct condensation occur and how is it prevented?

In-duct condensation has four main causes: (1) contact with cold surfaces below the dew point, (2) an elbow, damper, filter or coil inside the absorption distance, (3) over-humidification because duct humidity is not capped, (4) condensate formed in an uninsulated, long or sagging steam hose being carried to the distributor. Prevention: place the distributor after the coils, keep the absorption distance clear, use a high-limit humidity sensor, keep the steam line short, insulated and sloped, and remove condensate through a trap.

Is a single distributor enough for a large duct cross-section?

It depends on the section and the available straight duct length. A single distributor in a wide or tall section can concentrate steam in one region and lengthen the plume. In that case a multi-tube Multi-Steam™ spread across the section, or more than one distributor, is used; because steam is injected through many tubes, each plume is smaller and the distance shortens. Per manufacturer data, Multi-Steam™ has an absorption distance under 1 m. The number of distributors and the tube spacing are set by the manufacturer for the duct dimensions.

What are the requirements for the steam hose between unit and manifold?

Three core rules. (1) Distance, as short as possible; per the Neptronic installation manual, flexible hose at most 5 m in total; longer runs use insulated rigid pipe. (2) Insulation, the steam line must be insulated; atmospheric steam is saturated at about 100 °C and does not cool down when it loses heat, an amount equal to the heat lost condenses. (3) Slope, the hose should be routed with at least 2% slope on descending sections and at least 15% on rising sections (Neptronic installation manual) back to the unit or to a condensate trap; condensate flows back by gravity. Where these rules are ignored, condensate collects at low points, reaches the distributor and drips into the duct.

Why are drain slope and condensate trap mandatory?

Even in well-designed systems some condensate forms in the steam line and inside the distributor. The distributor is mounted with a slope so this condensate returns to the unit or a steam trap; the Multi-Steam™ header comes pitched from the factory. The Neptronic manual requires at least 2% slope on downward runs and at least 15% on upward runs of the steam line. The S-type trap in the condensate line keeps duct pressure from blowing steam and air out through the drain; its height must exceed the system static pressure by at least 51 mm (1,000 Pa ≈ 10 cm water column, trap ≈ 15 cm).

What is the difference between Neptronic SKD, S.A.M. and Multi-Steam™?

The SKD is a humidifier: it injects low-pressure facility boiler steam directly into the duct and covers 2–750 kg/h with Multi-Steam™ or jacketed distributors. S.A.M., S.A.M.E2 and Multi-Steam™ are distributors: they spread steam from a steam generator such as the SKE4, or from an SKD, across the duct section. Per manufacturer data, absorption distance is under 1.5 m for S.A.M./S.A.M.E2 and under 1 m for Multi-Steam™. The SKD is meant for sites with clean low-pressure steam; steam carrying boiler-treatment chemicals is not injected into hygiene-critical spaces, where the SKS4 or an SKE4 running on RO/DI water is considered.

What information should be sent to NKT for distributor selection?

Selection needs the duct or AHU section dimensions, airflow and the air velocity where the distributor will sit; the temperature and RH of the air reaching the distributor and the target humidity; the straight duct length from the distributor to the first elbow, filter or coil; and the steam source (facility steam, electric generation or steam-to-steam).
