What Is Adiabatic Humidification?

In adiabatic humidification, the energy for evaporation comes from the air itself rather than from a heater; each gram of moisture added per kilogram of air cools it by about 2.5 kelvin. This episode covers how adiabatic and steam humidification differ on the psychrometric chart, the summer and winter energy balance, water quality and hygiene requirements, and which method suits which application.

In this video

  • In adiabatic humidification the energy for evaporation comes from the air itself, not from a heater; each gram of moisture added per kilogram of air cools it by about 2.5 kelvin.
  • Steam humidification follows an almost vertical, isothermal line on the psychrometric chart, while adiabatic humidification moves up and to the left along constant wet-bulb temperature, and the air cannot cool below its wet-bulb temperature.
  • A system evaporating 100 kg of water per hour draws about 68 kW of heat from the air; in summer this is a gain, in winter it must be returned by the heating system.
  • Because water enters the air as a liquid, reverse osmosis water is recommended; standing water, biofilm and aerosol together create a Legionella risk, and VDI 6022 is a widely used hygiene reference.
  • Adiabatic systems suit high-capacity applications such as textiles, printing and greenhouses, with a typical control band of ±3–5% RH; cleanrooms and laboratories needing a narrow band prefer resistive steam humidification, which holds about ±1%.

Relative Humidity and Health

We usually judge indoor comfort by temperature alone, yet relative humidity shapes our health, productivity and the life of the building just as much. This episode uses the Sterling chart to cover the effects of low and high humidity, the ideal range and how humidity is controlled in both directions.
