Humidity Control in Swimming Pools

In an indoor pool, the heated water surface evaporates all day; this evaporation cannot be prevented, only controlled. This episode calculates evaporation with the VDI 2089 formula, works through a 32 m² villa pool example, and covers hall conditions, chloramines and corrosion, unit selection, air distribution and maintenance.

In this video

  • Evaporation is driven by the vapour pressure difference between the water surface and the hall air; the VDI 2089 formula is coefficient × surface area × vapour pressure difference.
  • In a 32 m² villa pool (water 28 °C, air 30 °C and 60%) evaporation is about 2 kg/h unused and 5.9 kg/h in use; with two hours of use per day it comes to about 55 litres.
  • VDI 2089 recommends 50–64% RH and an air temperature 2–3 °C above the water, at most 34 °C.
  • Chloramines start corrosion; the casing, coil and drain of a pool unit are selected for this environment, and exhaust air is taken from a low point close to the water surface.
  • With a 20% margin the example needs 66 litres per day; the Microwell DRY 500 SILVER removes 66 litres per day at 30 °C and 60%.

Relative Humidity and Health

We usually judge indoor comfort by temperature alone, yet relative humidity shapes our health, productivity and the life of the building just as much. This episode uses the Sterling chart to cover the effects of low and high humidity, the ideal range and how humidity is controlled in both directions.

Dehumidification Technologies

There are three main technologies for industrial dehumidification: desiccant rotor, condensing and pool units. This episode compares their operating principles, achievable dew points, strengths and limits, and shows how the target dew point and the ambient temperature drive the right choice.

How to Calculate Humidification Load

In winter, heated indoor air can drop below 15% relative humidity. This episode calculates the humidification load step by step from the absolute humidity difference and the volume of air entering the space, works through two examples with Türkiye climate data, and covers economisers, unit selection and the energy budget.

Electrode or Resistive?

Both steam humidifier technologies use about 0.75 kWh per kilogram of steam; the difference lies in water quality, control accuracy and maintenance. This episode covers how each technology works, the water conductivity band, scale management, ten years of consumables and a decision flow for selection.
