How to Calculate Humidification Load

In winter, heated indoor air can drop below 15% relative humidity. This episode calculates the humidification load step by step from the absolute humidity difference and the volume of air entering the space, works through two examples with Türkiye climate data, and covers economisers, unit selection and the energy budget.

  • Heating does not change the water vapour: outdoor air at −5 °C and 80% heated to 22 °C drops below 15% RH.
  • The calculation uses absolute humidity, which heating does not change: a 22 °C, 50% indoor space holds 8.2 g/kg, while Erzurum's winter air holds only 0.4 g/kg.
  • The humidification load is the difference between the target indoor and the outdoor absolute humidity multiplied by the air volume entering the space; the inputs are the design condition, the outdoor air and the air volume.
  • In the example print shop in Konya (1,620 m³, 0.6 air changes per hour, 24 °C and 45%) the load is about 8 kg/h; with a 20% margin a 10 kg/h unit is selected.
  • In a 15,000 m³/h air handler with an economiser, raising the fresh-air share from 15% to 100% increases the load from about 18 to 120 kg/h; the unit is selected with this condition in mind.

Relative Humidity and Health

We usually judge indoor comfort by temperature alone, yet relative humidity shapes our health, productivity and the life of the building just as much. This episode uses the Sterling chart to cover the effects of low and high humidity, the ideal range and how humidity is controlled in both directions.

Humidity Control in Swimming Pools

In an indoor pool, the heated water surface evaporates all day; this evaporation cannot be prevented, only controlled. This episode calculates evaporation with the VDI 2089 formula, works through a 32 m² villa pool example, and covers hall conditions, chloramines and corrosion, unit selection, air distribution and maintenance.
