ACADEMY SERIES · EPISODE 3Technology Selection

Dehumidification Technologies

There are three main technologies for industrial dehumidification: desiccant rotor, condensing and pool units. This episode compares their operating principles, achievable dew points, strengths and limits, and shows how the target dew point and the ambient temperature drive the right choice.

  • Desiccant rotor units can reach dew points as low as −60 °C; condensing units cannot go much below about +5 °C and work best above +10 °C.
  • About 75% of a desiccant rotor is the process zone and 25% the reactivation zone; reactivation air at 100–140 °C carries the captured moisture outside.
  • With natural gas or steam reactivation, operating costs typically fall by 40–60%, and by up to 75% with waste heat; good filtration protects rotor life.
  • Condensing units offer high efficiency (COP 3.5–5.0) and low investment in comfort applications, but are not recommended below 15 °C.
  • Pool units are built for chlorinated humidity, with coated steel, aluminium or stainless casings and epoxy- or cataphoresis-coated coils.
