Automotive & Glass Lamination

In the automotive sector, vehicle painting is one of the most quality-sensitive stages of the production process. The flawless application of primer, paint, and varnish layers after chassis and body parts have been cleaned by sandblasting or abrading depends on the environment meeting specific standards in terms of temperature, relative humidity, and air quality. The primary equipment that reliably maintains these conditions year-round is the industrial dehumidifier.

One of the most critical factors directly affecting paint quality is relative humidity. When relative humidity exceeds 60%, flash rust begins to form within minutes on steel surfaces prepared by sandblasting or scraping. This significantly reduces the adhesion strength of paint to the surface. International standards (ISO 8502-4) require that surface temperature before painting must be at least 3°C above the dew point. In solvent-based paints, high humidity slows solvent evaporation; in epoxy and polyurethane systems it causes surface hazing known as amine blush. In water-based paints, ambient humidity extends drying time and disrupts homogeneous film formation. All these problems demonstrate the direct impact of uncontrolled humidity conditions on final product quality.

In a paint shop integrated with an industrial dehumidifier, relative humidity is kept constant in the 40-55% RH range. Under these conditions, the safe window between sandblasting and painting extends from 4 hours to over 24 hours, providing flexibility in production planning and preventing material and labour losses from repeated sandblasting. In paint shop environments with high solvent vapour concentrations, ex-proof (explosion-protected) silica gel rotor industrial dehumidifiers are preferred for safe operation. These units are capable of bringing relative humidity below 35% RH without raising temperature, eliminating flash rust risk without negatively affecting paint viscosity.

To correctly determine paint shop dehumidifier capacity, booth volume, fresh air quantity, simultaneously painted surface area, and external climatic conditions must be evaluated together. Integration of the unit with the fresh air supply system provides both humidity control and solvent vapour dilution simultaneously. In systems using natural gas or steam for reactivation, energy costs are 40-60% lower compared to electrically powered alternatives.
