ACADEMY SERIES · EPISODE 7Steam Humidification

Electrode or Resistive?

Both steam humidifier technologies use about 0.75 kWh per kilogram of steam; the difference lies in water quality, control accuracy and maintenance. This episode covers how each technology works, the water conductivity band, scale management, ten years of consumables and a decision flow for selection.

  • Both technologies use about 0.75 kWh per kilogram of steam; the difference lies in water, control and maintenance.
  • In an electrode unit the current is carried by minerals in the water; according to Neptronic's technical report it works within about 125–1,250 µS/cm and does not work with RO or DI water.
  • In a resistive unit the water is boiled by heating elements in a stainless steel steam tank; it works with any water from mains to deionised and holds RH to about ±1% with solid-state relays.
  • A two-cylinder electrode unit producing 68 kg of steam per hour uses 40 cylinders in ten years with an average of two replacements per season; a resistive unit has no cylinder to replace.
  • When the water is RO or DI, or RH must be held in a narrow band, resistive technology comes first.

Relative Humidity and Health

We usually judge indoor comfort by temperature alone, yet relative humidity shapes our health, productivity and the life of the building just as much. This episode uses the Sterling chart to cover the effects of low and high humidity, the ideal range and how humidity is controlled in both directions.

Dehumidification Technologies

There are three main technologies for industrial dehumidification: desiccant rotor, condensing and pool units. This episode compares their operating principles, achievable dew points, strengths and limits, and shows how the target dew point and the ambient temperature drive the right choice.

How to Calculate Humidification Load

In winter, heated indoor air can drop below 15% relative humidity. This episode calculates the humidification load step by step from the absolute humidity difference and the volume of air entering the space, works through two examples with Türkiye climate data, and covers economisers, unit selection and the energy budget.

Humidity Control in Swimming Pools

In an indoor pool, the heated water surface evaporates all day; this evaporation cannot be prevented, only controlled. This episode calculates evaporation with the VDI 2089 formula, works through a 32 m² villa pool example, and covers hall conditions, chloramines and corrosion, unit selection, air distribution and maintenance.
