The Risk of Dry Air in a Server Room
Some failures in a server room begin not in the hardware but in the air that goes dry in winter. We cover hidden static damage, the effect of dust, the risk of too much humidity and how humidity is held within a safe range.

In this video
- Winter fresh air carries very little moisture; relative humidity falls as it warms up in the room.
- In dry air, charge cannot easily drain away; even a small static discharge can damage a component.
- This damage often does not show straight away: the component passes its test but its life is shortened.
- Dust that picks up a static charge clings to fans and boards and makes cooling harder.
- Too much humidity brings a condensation risk; the aim is to monitor it with sensors and hold it in a safe range.
