Why Cylinder Life Shortens in Electrode Humidifiers

The same electrode steam humidifier can give very different cylinder life on two sites: on one the cylinder lasts a long time, on the other it is replaced far more often. The difference comes from the feed water and how the unit is operated. This episode covers how minerals build up in the cylinder as steam is produced, how scale coats the electrodes, the conductivity band, the drain balance, foaming, water treatment choices and the effect of the operating profile on life, and compare them with resistive humidifiers that have a cleanable steam tank.

  • When water boils, only water molecules leave the cylinder and dissolved salts stay behind, so cylinder life is used up by the amount of steam produced and the mineral content of the water, not by the calendar.
  • As scale coats the electrodes, the unit raises the water level; once the water reaches the top level the unit can no longer deliver its rated capacity and the cylinder is replaced.
  • According to Neptronic's report, electrode units work in a conductivity band of roughly 125–1,250 µS/cm; if only a tenth of the feed water is drained, the salt concentration in the cylinder rises to about 10 times.
  • Softened water reduces scale but concentrates sodium salts, making foam control important; reverse osmosis and deionised water fall far below the band, so treatment is chosen to the unit manufacturer's feed water requirements.
  • In a resistive humidifier, minerals collect at the bottom of the stainless steam tank; the tank is removed and cleaned, there is no cylinder to replace, and water quality only sets the cleaning interval.

Relative Humidity and Health

We usually judge indoor comfort by temperature alone, yet relative humidity shapes our health, productivity and the life of the building just as much. This episode uses the Sterling chart to cover the effects of low and high humidity, the ideal range and how humidity is controlled in both directions.

How to Calculate Humidification Load

In winter, heated indoor air can drop below 15% relative humidity. This episode calculates the humidification load step by step from the absolute humidity difference and the volume of air entering the space, works through two examples with Türkiye climate data, and covers economisers, unit selection and the energy budget.

In an indoor pool, the heated water surface evaporates all day; this evaporation cannot be prevented, only controlled. This episode calculates evaporation with the VDI 2089 formula, works through a 32 m² villa pool example, and covers hall conditions, chloramines and corrosion, unit selection, air distribution and maintenance.
