Cargo Transportation – Bulk Carriers

Cargo Transportation – Bulk Carriers

Other Industrial Applications

Bulk cargo transportation forms the backbone of global trade, with commodities ranging from grain, cement, and mineral ores to sugar and chemical products carried across oceans in vast quantities. Cargo holds are large, open-volume spaces directly exposed to the constantly shifting temperature and humidity conditions of the marine environment. As the vessel transits between cold and warm climate zones, the dew point inside the hold fluctuates, causing condensation on metal surfaces. This condensation creates water droplets on the cargo surface, a phenomenon known as "ship sweat", that directly threatens cargo quality. A dehumidifier system is the most effective method for eliminating this risk at its source.

In grain transportation, neglecting humidity control creates favourable conditions for mould growth, germination, and mycotoxin formation. The consequences extend beyond simple value loss; cargo may be rejected at the destination port due to non-compliance with food safety regulations, resulting in severe commercial penalties. Cement and mineral products absorb moisture and form hard clumps that require costly crushing and screening before use. In both scenarios, an industrial dehumidifier integrated into the cargo hold preserves the cargo's loading-quality condition throughout the entire voyage to the discharge port.

Gas freeing operations represent one of the most safety-critical procedures in bulk carrier operations. Residual gases from the previous cargo must be completely purged from the hold before new cargo loading or hold maintenance can begin. Fresh air is supplied to the hold to bring the internal atmosphere to a safe composition. However, if the moisture content of this supply air is not controlled, intense condensation forms on hold surfaces, increasing corrosion risk and adversely affecting the accuracy of gas detection sensors. When dehumidifier-dried air is used during gas freeing, the operation is completed more safely and more rapidly.

Corrosion on hold surfaces constitutes one of the largest maintenance cost items in ship operation. The saline water film formed by condensation subjects the steel structure to continuous electrochemical attack. Paint and coating systems withstand these conditions for only a limited period; once corrosion initiates, structural integrity weakens and classification society surveys generate costly repair demands. A dehumidifier system operating continuously during the voyage maintains hold relative humidity below the condensation threshold, protecting steel surfaces and significantly extending maintenance intervals.

Dehumidifier systems designed for bulk carriers are built to withstand the demanding conditions of the marine environment. Salt-laden air, vibration, power supply fluctuations, and limited installation space are vessel-specific constraints that inform the system sizing and configuration. Depending on hold volume and trade route, single or multiple unit configurations may be deployed. Silica gel rotor-based adsorption dehumidifiers are the preferred technology in the maritime sector due to their high performance even at low ambient temperatures where refrigerant-based systems lose efficiency.

In modern bulk cargo operations, humidity management has a broad economic impact area spanning insurance premiums, port penalty risks, maintenance costs, and cargo value depreciation. A dehumidifier system that continuously monitors and controls humidity conditions inside the cargo hold significantly reduces all of these risks and strengthens the vessel's commercial competitiveness.
