Cold Store Humidity: Why Silica Gel?

Summer air at 30 °C and 60% relative humidity carries about 28 times more water than the air in a −20 °C freezer room; every door opening turns that difference into ice, frost and more frequent defrosting. This episode covers the door load, the limits of condensing dehumidifiers at low dew points, how silica gel rotor dehumidification works, drying the anteroom and where to install the unit.

In this video

  • Summer air at 30 °C and 60% RH carries about 28 times more water than the air in a −20 °C freezer room; the difference returns as ice and frost on the evaporator and ever more frequent defrosting.
  • A 3 × 3 metre door with no curtain, between 32 °C outdoor air and a −20 °C room, lets in about 5 kg of water vapour during each 45-second opening; at 8 openings an hour the load approaches 40 kg per hour.
  • Condensing units are efficient at dew points above +10 °C, while below +5 °C the coil ices up; most cold rooms and every freezer room sit below that limit.
  • A silica gel rotor dehumidifier holds moisture by adsorption and can reach dew points down to −60 °C; the ADI and ADO series are purpose-built for freezer rooms between −30 and −18 °C.
  • Holding the anteroom at 5 °C with a sub-zero dew point cuts the moisture entering per opening about tenfold, and the unit is selected on its real capacity at operating temperature, not on the catalogue figure.

Relative Humidity and Health

We usually judge indoor comfort by temperature alone, yet relative humidity shapes our health, productivity and the life of the building just as much. This episode uses the Sterling chart to cover the effects of low and high humidity, the ideal range and how humidity is controlled in both directions.

Dehumidification Technologies

There are three main technologies for industrial dehumidification: desiccant rotor, condensing and pool units. This episode compares their operating principles, achievable dew points, strengths and limits, and shows how the target dew point and the ambient temperature drive the right choice.

How to Calculate Humidification Load

In winter, heated indoor air can drop below 15% relative humidity. This episode calculates the humidification load step by step from the absolute humidity difference and the volume of air entering the space, works through two examples with Türkiye climate data, and covers economisers, unit selection and the energy budget.

Humidity Control in Swimming Pools

In an indoor pool, the heated water surface evaporates all day; this evaporation cannot be prevented, only controlled. This episode calculates evaporation with the VDI 2089 formula, works through a 32 m² villa pool example, and covers hall conditions, chloramines and corrosion, unit selection, air distribution and maintenance.
