ACADEMY SERIES · EPISODE 20Lithium Battery Dry Rooms
Dry Room Design for Lithium Battery Manufacturing
In lithium battery manufacturing the most dangerous contaminant is invisible: water vapour in the air. The lithium salt in the electrolyte reacts with moisture and cuts the cell's capacity and life. This episode covers humidity zones and dew point targets in dry rooms, the limit of refrigerant dehumidification, the role of the silica gel rotor and its purge sector, a worked moisture load and dry-air flow for an assembly room, pressure cascades, dew point monitoring and unit selection.

In this video
- The main risk in a lithium-ion cell is the lithium hexafluorophosphate salt in the electrolyte; it breaks down with water to form hydrofluoric acid (HF), cutting capacity and shortening life.
- Not every area needs the same dryness: anode processes run at 30% RH and cathode processes at 10% RH, while assembly, electrolyte filling and dry storage are held at 0.3–0.5% RH, a dew point of −40 to −45 °C.
- The cold surface of a condensing unit ices up below a dew point of about +5 °C; a silica gel rotor reaches down to −60 °C, and its purge sector delivers a lower dew point with less reactivation energy.
- In a 280 m³ example assembly room targeting −40 °C, the total moisture load is 9.63 kg/h and the design load with a 20% margin is 11.56 kg/h; holding the target takes about 11,000 m³/h of dry air.
- The dry room is kept at +12 to +25 Pa positive pressure behind double-door airlocks; electrolyte filling exhaust never passes through the rotor, and dew point is monitored continuously at supply, room and return.
