ACADEMY SERIES · EPISODE 10Steam Humidification

Steam Distribution & Absorption Distance

In steam humidification, producing the steam is only half the job; the other half is delivering it into the duct air at the right point and in the right way. When the air slows to 1 metre per second, the final humidity reaches 86% and the steam cloud stretches along the duct. This episode covers the distribution pipe, the absorption distance and what drives it, where the distributor belongs in the air handling unit, the high-limit sensor, and the rules for the steam hose and condensate line.

  • The white cloud in front of the distributor is not water vapour but micron-sized droplets; the distance to the point where it fully disappears is the absorption distance.
  • Absorption distance depends most on the RH after humidification: with 20 kg of steam per hour in the same duct, final humidity is about 52% at 4 m/s air velocity but 86% at 1 m/s.
  • The most effective way to shorten the distance is to divide the steam across several tubes; according to Neptronic, it is under 1.5 metres for the S.A.M. and S.A.M.E2 and under 1 metre for the multi-tube Multi-Steam.
  • The distributor goes after the heating and cooling coils, and no bend, damper, filter, coil or sensor sits within the absorption distance.
  • Flexible steam hose is limited to 5 metres in total, sloped at least 2% on falling and 15% on rising sections; for 1,000 Pa of duct pressure the condensate trap needs about 15 cm of height.

Relative Humidity and Health

We usually judge indoor comfort by temperature alone, yet relative humidity shapes our health, productivity and the life of the building just as much. This episode uses the Sterling chart to cover the effects of low and high humidity, the ideal range and how humidity is controlled in both directions.

Dehumidification Technologies

There are three main technologies for industrial dehumidification: desiccant rotor, condensing and pool units. This episode compares their operating principles, achievable dew points, strengths and limits, and shows how the target dew point and the ambient temperature drive the right choice.

How to Calculate Humidification Load

In winter, heated indoor air can drop below 15% relative humidity. This episode calculates the humidification load step by step from the absolute humidity difference and the volume of air entering the space, works through two examples with Türkiye climate data, and covers economisers, unit selection and the energy budget.

Humidity Control in Swimming Pools

In an indoor pool, the heated water surface evaporates all day; this evaporation cannot be prevented, only controlled. This episode calculates evaporation with the VDI 2089 formula, works through a 32 m² villa pool example, and covers hall conditions, chloramines and corrosion, unit selection, air distribution and maintenance.
