Ammunition Storage

Ammunition Storage

Defense & Military Systems

Ammunition storage is one of the most critical and sensitive links in defense logistics. An ammunition depot contains not only explosive materials but also electronic detonator systems, guidance kits, rocket motors, pyrotechnic materials, and sensitive optical components together. All these different types of materials have a common enemy: uncontrolled moisture. Industrial dehumidifier solutions specially designed for ammunition depots are the most effective way to eliminate this threat.

Measurements taken at ammunition depots worldwide show that ambient relative humidity ranges between 80 and 100% when adequate precautions are not taken. These levels pose a serious threat to the chemical and physical integrity of stored ammunition. Military standards stipulate that relative humidity in ammunition storage areas be maintained between 50 and 60%. When this range is exceeded, corrosion accelerates, propellant components begin to deteriorate, and conductivity problems emerge in electronic ignition systems.

The effect of humidity on ammunition is not limited to rusting. An oxide layer forms on the casing surfaces of rounds stored in high-humidity environments, which can cause jams in weapon mechanisms. When solid fuel components in rocket motors absorb moisture, combustion characteristics change, this directly affects firing performance and can cause range deviation. Sensitive circuit boards in guidance kits and electronic detonators are particularly vulnerable to moisture-related corrosion. Microscopic-level corrosion in a detonator circuit can make the entire ammunition batch unreliable.

In depots without a professional dehumidifier, the temperature difference between night and day causes serious problems. During the day, heated air carries more moisture, while as temperatures drop at night, this moisture turns into condensation on metal surfaces. This constantly repeating sweating cycle on the inner surfaces of ammunition crates, bullet casings, and electronic components causes irreversible damage over time. This effect becomes much more pronounced especially in regions with challenging climatic conditions and in large-volume depots. The reliability of ammunition stored in a depot without humidity control infrastructure decreases slightly with each passing day.

At this point, adsorption dehumidifier technology comes into play. These systems continuously process depot air to maintain relative humidity at the desired level. Moisture molecules in the air are adsorbed through a special rotor structure and dried air is returned to the depot. This process takes place without using a mechanical compressor or refrigerant gas; therefore, energy consumption is much lower compared to conventional air conditioning systems. Even more importantly, this technology produces no sparks. Since sparks and open flame sources carry unacceptable risks in ammunition storage environments, the completely spark-free operation of the dehumidifier is a vital necessity.

The most notable contribution of using appropriate dehumidifiers in ammunition depots is the significant extension of the shelf life of stored materials. Ammunition stored in a controlled environment can fully meet its design life and even exceed it. This represents great savings from a defense budget perspective, as the disposal and replacement costs of prematurely aged ammunition are extremely high.

Another important benefit of humidity control is the safety dimension. Deterioration caused by moisture, especially in older ammunition types, can lead to the formation of unstable chemical compounds. This increases the risk of spontaneous ignition during storage. It is known that some of the ammunition depot accidents throughout history have stemmed from inappropriate storage conditions. A controlled humidity environment minimizes this risk.

Today, modern ammunition depots use dehumidifier systems integrated with remote monitoring and automation infrastructure. Temperature and humidity values inside the depot are continuously tracked via sensors, data is transmitted to a central control system, and automatic intervention is carried out when necessary. This allows optimum conditions to be maintained even in large-scale ammunition depots without requiring human intervention.
