ACADEMY SERIES · EPISODE 24Plastics Production
Dehumidification in Plastics Production
In plastics production, moisture does harm in two ways: moisture inside the granules causes defects and hydrolysis during processing, and moisture in the room air condenses on the cold mould surface and causes mould sweating. This episode covers hygroscopic and non-hygroscopic plastics, processing moisture limits, moisture regain in granules, mould sweating with a worked dew point example, why warming the cooling water is not a lasting fix, the lasting fix with dry air, technology choice and capacity sizing.

In this video
- Moisture harms plastics in two ways: by entering hygroscopic granules (polyamide, polycarbonate, PET) and by condensing on cold surfaces; in polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene it stays on the surface.
- Typical processing moisture limits are 0.20% for polyamide, 0.02% for polycarbonate and 0.005% for PET; wet granules cause silver streaks and bubbles, and hydrolysis in polycarbonate, PET and polyamide causes permanent loss.
- Mould sweating occurs when the room dew point exceeds the mould surface: at 28 °C and 75% RH the dew point is about 23 °C, while a mould cooled with 10 °C water has a surface of about 15 °C.
- Warming the cooling water lengthens the cycle: if an 8-cavity mould goes from 28 to 34 seconds, hourly output drops by about 18%. The lasting fix is supplying dry air at a +10 °C dew point to the mould area.
- At +10 °C and above a condensing unit is efficient, while below +5 °C a silica gel rotor is needed; drying 1,000 m³/h of air from 17.9 to 7.6 g/kg removes about 12 kg of water per hour.
