Why is humidity control so important in cannabis (hemp) cultivation?

Cannabis plants have different humidity requirements at each stage of their life cycle. While the seedling stage requires 65–70% RH, this drops to 40–50% RH during flowering. High humidity creates conditions for diseases such as Botrytis (grey mould) and powdery mildew, while low humidity causes water stress in the plant. Controlled humidity is the primary determinant of yield, quality and product safety.

What are the target humidity values during the drying and curing stage?

During the post-harvest drying stage, ambient humidity should be maintained at 45–55% RH and temperature at 15–21 °C. During curing, 58–65% RH is targeted. These conditions preserve terpenes and active compounds while preventing microbial growth. Overly rapid drying (high temperature/low humidity) causes aroma volatilisation.

Which dehumidifier technology is used in cannabis facilities?

Condensing (mechanical) dehumidifiers are preferred in flowering and drying rooms due to high heat loads and wide humidity ranges. Silica gel rotor adsorption units are deployed in cold climates or dry storage areas requiring very low humidity. Facility size, number of zones and climate conditions are the determining factors in system design.

What is VPD and how is it used in cannabis cultivation?

VPD (Vapour Pressure Deficit) refers to the difference in water vapour pressure between the leaf surface and the ambient air. The ideal VPD for cannabis plants is 0.8–1.2 kPa during the vegetative stage and 1.0–1.5 kPa during flowering. VPD cannot be optimised without controlling temperature and humidity together, which is why the dehumidifier and HVAC system must operate in an integrated manner.
