Humidity control in cleanroom environments is an engineering requirement directly linked to particle management and process safety. In cleanrooms classified according to ISO 14644 standard, temperature and humidity parameters must be maintained within specified tolerances alongside air particle counts. The humidity profile of cleanrooms operating across a wide spectrum from semiconductor manufacturing to pharmaceutical production, biotechnology laboratories to optical component assembly directly determines product quality and yield.

High air change rates are applied in cleanroom HVAC systems; 240-600 air changes per hour can occur in an ISO Class 5 cleanroom. This intensive air circulation causes ambient humidity to drop rapidly. The moisture content of filtered air varies significantly depending on outdoor conditions and season. Industrial humidifier systems must be designed with capacity to maintain target humidity levels even under these high air flow conditions.

Electrostatic discharge risk increases dramatically in low-humidity cleanroom environments. In applications such as semiconductor wafer processing, micro-electromechanical system manufacturing, and nanoscale component assembly, a single ESD event can cause millions of dollars in product damage. Maintaining ambient relative humidity at 40-50% lowers surface resistance, enabling controlled dissipation of static charges. Humidity control is a mandatory requirement in ESD-protected areas under IEC 61340-5-1 standard.

The most critical criterion in cleanroom humidification system selection is that the system itself does not become a particle source. Ultrasonic humidification and high-pressure nozzle systems can disrupt the cleanroom's particle class by producing water droplet aerosols. Additionally, minerals in water transform into suspended particle residues in air after evaporation. Steam humidification technology is based on the principle of delivering water to the environment after completing its phase change and is therefore the preferred solution for cleanroom environments.

Integration of the cleanroom humidification system with HVAC infrastructure is critical for maintaining air distribution patterns. Positioning the humidification point at adequate distance from HEPA filters, ensuring complete absorption distance of steam, and eliminating condensation risk must be considered during the design phase. The system must include calibration-certified humidity sensors, alarm functions, and data recording infrastructure within validation requirements.
